The toe drain at the base of the earthen dam on the
Dead River in Michigan's upper peninsula needed to be replaced. Soils
surrounding the site were saturated and the existing drains no longer
functioned adequately. Zenith Tech was selected to complete the work.
CHALLENGE:
Overcome the phenomenon called 'liquefaction'.
Replacement of the drains required sheeting. The vibratory hammer
initially used caused the soils to become 'quick' and lose all support
value. The event occurs when soil pressure is equalized by water pressure.
Water would erupt from the earth.
SOLUTION:
Control the condition and finish the work.
Zenith Tech engineers changed the pile hammer type, revised the equipment layout,
finished the sheeting and replaced the drains.
