GOAL:
Replace the old railroad bridge over Park Street |
When the City of Madison began the improvement of Park Street, the old through girder bridge that carried the Wisconsin Southern Railroad over the street had to be replaced. The underpass was narrow and very dangerous. The railroad was supported by sheet piling, tied back to prevent lateral movement. Train traffic continued to move over Park Street. |
 |
SOLUTION:
Construct a bridge that is structurally sound, visually appealing and safe for all types of traffic. |
On the west end of the structure, there is a utility vault located beneath the park-like plaza. Notice the fresh air vent systems in the photograph to the right. The vents are cast into the oversize balusters around the plaza. The project offers a comfortable environment while providing safe transportation facilities for train, vehicular, and pedestrian traffic.
