GOAL: Creat a cost-effective sand-unloading facility. |
To product the highest quality asphalt products at competitive market prices, Payne & Dolan, Inc. developed this sand-unloading facility in cooperation with Zenith Tech, Inc. and the Wisconsin Central Railroad (WCL). Analyses showed that it was more cost effective to have manufactured sand delivered to its Waukesha asphalt plant by train than it was to truck the material. |  |
CHALLENGE: Facility must accommodate train-delivered sand. |
The manufactured sand is drop unloaded from hopper cars into the grated area between the rails. The sand then is conveyed from the hopper by belt and elevated to be deposited for use in production of several Payne & Dolan premium asphalt mixes. |  |
SOLUTION: Hoppers, tracks and conveyer belts transport sand to strategic spots throughout the plant site. |
The project represents the cooperative efforts of Payne & Dolan, Zenith Tech, and WCL. It is an example of what can be achieved in a design-build environment when the goals and scope of the work are understood and the benefits are mutual. |
