Repair the aging dam and spillway in the Rock River
The City of Watertown engaged Zenith Tech to repair
the aging dam and spillway in the Rock River. Along with the dam repair,
the Rock River Power & Light Company had a new powerhouse constructed
to house its two turbines. The powerhouse is located between the old
tainter gate section and the existing dam. The new turbines operate
under 10 feet of head. The photos to the right illustrate the before
and after construction conditions of the project.
CHALLENGE:
Protect habitat and anchor existing dam
This section of the river is a sensitive fishery. To assure that
habitat was protected, close coordination with the Wisconsin Department
of Natural Resources was required. Bank protection was important to
the City because of the location of the project in the City. There
is a pedestrian facility on the east side of the river. The results
of the protective effort can be seen between the new building and
the existing vegetated river bank.
SOLUTION:
Resurface existing dam with reinforced concrete and add waterproof
membrane
The construction required that the existing dam be anchored into
bedrock using grouted cable tendons. The old dam was then resurfaced
with reinforced concrete and a waterproof membrane was installed
on the upstream face. The existing spillway was rehabilitated as
part of the project.
